How Soon After Death Can You Contact a Loved One?

How soon after death can you contact a loved one? Sooner than you think in one sense, and later than you'd hope in another. Your loved one is connected to you from the moment they cross, and you can feel that connection right away. But if you're asking about a formal sitting with a medium, my honest answer is that the best window tends to open a while later. My favorite time is around six months out. In the first weeks, I can't promise a clear, settled connection, and there are good reasons for the wait that actually protect you. Let me explain.

The connection starts immediately, the sitting is different

I want to separate two things, because they get blended together. The love and the connection between you and the person who died do not switch off and wait six months. From the moment they cross, they're still connected to you, often close, often aware. Many people feel a sign or a presence in the very early days, and that's real. You don't have to wait for that.

A formal reading, where you sit down expecting a clear, detailed, back-and-forth connection, is a different thing. That's what the timing is about. And there, the early days are genuinely harder.

Why the first month is too soon

In the first weeks after a death, a soul is often still settling. The crossing is a process, not an instant, and right after passing, a soul can be in transition, still adjusting, still moving toward the place where it heals. If I sit down to connect that soon, I can't guarantee a clear connection, because the person may simply not be settled enough to come through with clarity. There's also a risk I take seriously: very soon after death, some souls haven't fully crossed yet, and I never want to reach toward a soul in a way that pulls at something still in motion. So I wait, deliberately, out of respect for them and honesty with you.

I'd rather tell you the truth than take a grieving person's money and hope for the best in a week when the odds are poor. That's not the kind of work I do.

Why around six months tends to be right

By roughly half a year, a few things have usually happened. The soul has settled into the other side and can come through more clearly and fully. And just as importantly, you have moved through the very rawest stage of grief, enough to actually receive what comes without being overwhelmed. A reading in the first flood of loss can be too much to hold. A little further on, you can take it in. Six months is my favorite for both those reasons. It isn't a hard rule, and every situation is its own, but that's the window I trust most.

The honest part I won't skip

Here's what I always tell people, gently and directly. Even at the right time, I can't guarantee that a specific person will come through, or that you'll get the exact message you're aching for. I'm right about 70 percent of the time, and it all comes through my own filter. So if you come to a sitting, come open rather than gripping a single outcome, because the gripping is what tends to get in the way. If something lands as true and your heart feels full, let it be true. That's the part to keep.

What matters more than the timing

And here's the reframe I most want you to carry, because it's bigger than any appointment. The person you're missing is vastly larger than the relationship you had with them. They aren't frozen at the moment you lost them. They're continuing, healing, learning, still connected to you. Contact through a medium can be beautiful, but it isn't the only thread between you, and it isn't the thing that keeps them close. The connection is already there. When you can loosen your grip on who they were to you, something in you gets a little bigger too, and that is available to you today, no sitting required. You are not abandoned, and you never were.

Be gentle with yourself in the early days. There's no schedule you're failing to keep. If and when the time feels right for a sitting, it'll still be there.

If you want more of how I understand death, souls, and staying connected in a grounded way, I write about it every week over on my Substack, Field Notes. It's free. Come find me there. I'm sending you a lot of love.
