Intuition or Anxiety? How to Tell the Difference
If you want to know whether it's intuition or anxiety talking, look for the story. Anxiety pulls from your past to disguise itself as intuition. Real intuition arrives clean, with no story attached. That's the whole difference, and once you know to look for it, you can usually tell within seconds which one is speaking.
I teach this in the very first week of my mentorship, because it sits underneath every other question my students bring me: is what I'm receiving real, or am I making it up?
Why do intuition and anxiety feel so similar?
Because they knock at the same door. Both show up uninvited. Both feel urgent. Both can arrive as a voice, a knowing, a pull toward something or away from it. If you're a sensitive person, you've probably spent years mixing the two up, talking yourself out of the real thing while obeying the false one.
I want you to hear this: that confusion is not a flaw in you. Fear wants to be believed, so it dresses itself in the same clothes your intuition wears.
The tell: where the information comes from
Anxiety and fear rely on past information. They pull from things that already happened to you, and they use that history to pass themselves off as intuition, or as a psychic hit.
Here's the example I always give. You're getting ready to go to the store. Coat on, keys in hand, and you hear: not now. Then you suddenly start thinking about it, and before you know it your mind has built the whole disaster. It's going to be terrible. Something bad is going to happen. You can see the entire scene. All of that is happening in your head, and it's being assembled from your past, tapping into the fender bender you had the year prior and feeding you that fear as the truth. Now you don’t know if you should go or stay.
That's the tell. Intuition gives you the message and stops. Anxiety gives you the message and then keeps writing the movie.
A practical way to test it
The next time something says no, pause and watch what happens in the next sixty seconds. If the message stays simple and neutral, treat it as information. If it starts collecting evidence, replaying old memories, building a case, that's fear doing an impression of your intuition.
And you don't have to get it right on the first try. I've been doing this work for a long time and I still check myself. Telling the two apart is a skill, and it sharpens the way every skill does, with repetition and practice.
Why does this matter more for sensitive people?
If you receive a lot, fear has more material to work with. The answer is not to shut yourself down. It's to learn the difference well enough that you can trust what you get and act on it without the spiral. That's the freedom I want for you.
If this is the skill you've been trying to build alone, my seven week mentorship is where I teach it, with practice and direct feedback. Applications for the Fall 2026 cohort are open until September 8: apply here.
I'm sending you a lot of love.
