The 3 Types of Spirit Guides (and Who's Actually on Your Team)

Everyone has spirit guides. Everyone, without exception: a minimum of four, in my experience. They fall into three types: beings of light, ancestor guides, and ascended masters. Each one has a different job, a different feel, and a different reason for being on your team.

Beings of light

Beings of light are the core of your team. Their names, when they give you one, are closer to a translation than a birth certificate: their real language is light, so a guide might simply tell you, call me Josephine, because Josephine is something your human mind can hold.

The day to day work of your guides is quiet. I joke with my students that guides are like good IT people: when they're doing their job well, you don't even notice they're there. It's only when something breaks that you suddenly say, please come help me.

Ancestor guides

Ancestor guides are my favorite to encounter in a reading. These are souls connected to your soul's own history, and they hold what I describe as a hall pass: they can move between their dimension and ours more easily than other souls. They tend to be practical, close, and deeply invested in you.

One distinction I want you to keep: an ancestor guide is not the same thing as a recently passed loved one watching over you.

Ascended masters

Ascended masters work more like archetypes. They’re large, recognisable energies that tend to appear when a particular kind of support is needed, rather than attaching themselves to one person. I’ve seen Mother Mary come through during pregnancy and after someone has lost their mum. In those moments, what I’m shown is a deeply maternal presence arriving where that care is needed. You don’t have to follow a particular faith to experience it. It’s bigger than any one tradition.

What your guides will and won't do

Here is the part most people get wrong. Your guides are a relationship, not a dictatorship. Guides inform, they don't make decisions for you. Real guidance has a signature feel: neutral, clear, unhurried. If something in your head is forced, dramatic, or urgent, that is not your guides. That is fear wearing a costume.

How do I know which guides I have?

You learn it the same way you learn any relationship: contact, patience, and repetition. Start small, confirm what you feel, and let the specific personalities reveal themselves over time.

And if you want to go past knowing about your guides and into working with them, that is what I teach inside my seven week mentorship, in a grounded room with direct feedback: learn more here. I'm sending you a lot of love.
